Welcome to the Land of Thunder Dragon! Upon arrival, our team will welcome you and start the journey to Thimphu (2,350 m above sea level), the capital of Bhutan around 1.5-hour drive. The capital of the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, Thimphu is a stronghold of traditional Bhutanese art, architecture and culture. Situated at 2,320 m (7656 ft) above sea level, it is home to over 100,000 inhabitants, including the Royal family of the country. 

En-route stop to visit the Tamchog Lhakhang; built by Thangtong Gyalpo, a pioneering engineer who introduced the construction of suspension bridges into Bhutan and Tibet. It is believed that more than 58 bridges were built across the country however only 2 have survived.

Arrival

Visit the Royal Textile Academy of Bhutan, which plays a significant role in preserving and promoting the country's culture and heritage. Founded by the queen mother, Her Majesty Ashi Sangay Choden Wangchuck, the academy is a non-governmental, non-profit organization that aims to conserve, restore, and document the art of weaving. In addition to its conservation efforts, the academy serves as a national centre for educating young students in textiles, fabric design, and museum studies. It is also a popular destination for tourists seeking to learn about Bhutan's weaving traditions and view its masterpieces. Conclude your day with a visit to the Farmer's market, a vibrant hub where Thimphu's populace and valley residents gather. The bustling market offers an eclectic variety of foodstuffs, as well as local arts and crafts for sale.

Textile and Local Market

Your next destination is Buddha Dordenma. This colossal statue of Shakyamuni Buddha contains more than 100,000 smaller Buddha statues, each made of bronze and gilded in gold. The statue stands at an impressive height of 51.5 meters (169 feet), making it one of the tallest Buddha statues globally. According to an ancient prophecy dating back to the 8th century CE, which was discovered by Terton Pema Lingpa, the Religious Treasure Discoverer of the time, the statue is meant to bring peace and happiness to the world.

From this point, you will embark on a trail that leads through a picturesque stretch of forest, towards Changangkha Lhakhang. The hike offers breathtaking panoramas of the Thimphu valley below and is frequently used by His Majesty the fourth king for mountain biking.

Iconic Buddha Statue

During your visit to Thimphu, it is highly recommended to pay a visit to the National Memorial Chorten, a well-known landmark constructed in 1974 in memory of the third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, who is revered as the Father of Modern Bhutan.

Another must-see attraction is the Royal Takin Preserve, where you can witness Bhutan's national animal, the takin. These large, shaggy, and hoofed mammals come with a bit of mythology attached to them. Legend has it that the great Buddhist yogi, Drupa Kunley, also known as ‘the Divine Madman,' created the animal.

Perched on the upper reaches of the Motithang area, the 16-suite Lodge of Amankora Thimphu is inspired by the traditional dzong fortress design. Amankora Thimphu is within reach of the capital’s shops and sights, but the lodge remains a secluded retreat from which to explore both all the city has to offer and the wild Himalayan landscape.

Pemako Thimphu is centrally located in the middle of the city. It’s imposing structure dominates the Thimphu’s skyline, mirroring the fortresses (Dzong) of ancient Bhutan. The traditional murals and colours adorning the walls and ceilings are a good first introduction to Bhutanese architecture. Pemako Thimphu offers comfort and luxury. Your journey to Punakha, located approximately a two-hour drive away, will be an exhilarating experience. The route ascends through a picturesque forest of pine and cedar trees, culminating in the Dochu La pass, a remarkable Bhutanese mountain pass that peaks at 3,140 m. Along the way, you will encounter mesmerizing views of the snow-capped eastern Himalaya range during the winter season, linking the cities of Thimphu and Punakha.
Upon arriving at Dochu La, take a moment to pay your respects at the 108 stupas, which honor the fallen Bhutanese soldiers. Prior to reaching Punakha, make a stop en route and embark on a hike to Chimi Lhakhang. This temple, situated atop a hill in the heart of the valley, is dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kuenley, also known as the 'Divine Madman.' In the 15th century, he employed humor, song, and dramatic reenactments to disseminate his teachings.

Journey to Punakha

Today you will visit Punakha Dzong. The dzong, built in 1637, is the second oldest in the country and served as the government's seat for many years. It is a remarkable symbol of Bhutan's rich history, and its white walls stand out in stunning contrast against the lush greens and blues of the surrounding landscape. Notably, the dzong holds a significant relic that has been the cause of numerous wars with Tibetans and is a crucial pilgrimage site. It's also where all of Bhutan's kings are crowned before ascending the throne in Thimphu.

Punakha Dzong

You will embark on a hike to the Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten, a three-story Lhakhang built by Her Majesty the Queen Ashi Tshering Yangdon. This recent addition to Bhutan's range of architecturally splendid buildings features representations of tantric forms of Buddhist deities that subjugate enemies and protect the people of Bhutan. The hike involves a mere 45-minute walk from the suspension bridge.

Later in the evening, you will drive to the Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang Nunnery. This magnificent structure situated amongst the pine trees houses a 4.2 m bronze statue of Avalokiteshvara, crafted by local Bhutanese artisans. Partaking in a Tshewang (blessing) ceremony, you will offer prayers for personal empowerment, wish fulfillment, and a healthy life. The ceremony, which lasts for approximately 30 minutes, involves the lighting of butter lamps in which you will be invited to participate.

Explore Punakha Valley

COMO Uma Punakha

COMO's smallest, most jewel-like Uma lodge sits on a small hill at the western end of the Punakha Valley above the Mo Chhu river. It seems to breathe a different air, and is ideally located for Himalayan exploration, for village treks, temples, festivals, and whitewater rafting. Amankora Punakha

Paro, a historic town located at an elevation of 2,250 m, boasts numerous sacred sites and historical edifices scattered throughout the area. It is home to some of Bhutan's oldest temples and monasteries, the National Museum, and the country's only airport. The northern end of the valley is dominated by the majestic Mt. Jhomolhari (7,326 m), surrounded by the roaring glacial waters of the Pa Chu (Paro River), which flow through deep gorges.

Post-lunch, a visit to Ta Dzong is recommended. The watchtower was initially constructed to safeguard Rinpung Dzong during the inter-valley wars of the 17th century. Since 1967, the Ta Dzong has been serving as the National Museum of the country. Subsequently, a visit to a farmhouse is suggested. Paro valley's beauty is adorned by clusters of traditional farmhouses. These Bhutanese farmhouses are known for their striking colors, decorations, and unique construction, where not a single nail is used. All the houses follow the same architectural pattern, making a visit to a traditional farmhouse both educational and an opportunity to glimpse into the lifestyle of a farmer.

Back to Paro

Following breakfast, you will embark on a scenic drive towards Chele La, one of the highest motor-able passes in Bhutan, situated at an altitude of 3,788 meters. Here, the picturesque views of the sacred Mt. Jhomolhari, Mt. Jichu Drake, and on a clear day, the world's third highest peak, Mt. Kanchenjunga, await us, accompanied by hundreds of fluttering prayer flags.

Subsequently, a hike to Kila Goemba, located a 2-hour drive from Chele La, presents the perfect opportunity to stretch our legs. The approximately 305-meter ascent offers a 360-degree vista of Bhutan's natural splendor, including the Paro and Haa valleys. Flora enthusiasts will appreciate the plethora of plant species, particularly during spring when the rhododendron bushes are in full bloom. The Kila Goemba Nunnery, considered to be the oldest in Bhutan, is our destination. Housing over 100 nuns, the nunnery features seven small temples and various retreat huts built on the cliffside.

Chele La Pass

Embark on a brief drive to Ramthankha, followed by a hike to the Taktsang monastery, also known as Tiger's Nest. Situated at an elevation of 2,950m, this architectural marvel is built on a steep cliff face. The trek, which takes approximately four hours, provides breathtaking views of the surroundings. The trail meanders through a serene pine forest, adorned with Spanish moss, and occasionally, fluttering prayer flags. Legend has it that Guru Rinpoche, the founder of Buddhism in Bhutan, flew on a tigress from eastern Bhutan to this cliff, where he introduced Buddhist teachings and meditation. The monastery is among the most revered and sacred Buddhist sites worldwide.
